One of the options for the cash strapped person who is looking to develop a website or create a web presence is to create a blog. There are both positive and negative considerations when making the decision to create a blog (especially if you are publishing a blog instead of developing a website.)
A freestanding blog is a free or inexpensive way to develop a web presence. The word "blog" sounds "techie" but really, a blog is nothing more than a notebook online for you to write about your service or product, thoughts or opinions, much like you would write a letter and post it on a bulletin board. If you know how to use WORD, you know how to write a blog.
Who should consider a blog? Creating a blog is perfect for someone who has limited cash (the cost is free or nominal,) would like to create a web presence, and is committed to updating the blog content regularly. Be prepared for a community to develop around your writing. The more compelling your text, the more subscribers you will attract.
Reasons to choose a freestanding blog: It's free! It's easy. It's a way to stick your "toe" into the web waters. You can literally create a blog in 1 minute. The "big" sites to develop your blog are Wordpress, Blogger, TypePad, and Blog.com.
Why wouldn't you choose a freestanding blog? A website is a better choice if you are launching a business or have an established business. A website, at this time, is much more robust. The best choice is to create a website with a blog embedded in it. Why? Integrating a blog in your website allows you to reap the rewards of keyword rich text in all blog posts. A freestanding blog will not provide the best search engine optimization. It is more ideal to create your own URL. Blogs aren't searched nearly as often as websites, although organic searches will often pull blog sites. Also, there are limitations to customizing and branding a freestanding blog.
