What I love about owning a marketing firm is the opportunity to support people's vision and goals for their life and their business. When the client's vision is clear, when the company has integrity, when everything clicks, the relationship is a true joy. The value is clear to everyone. However, sometimes client relationships aren't that consistent.
It's a fit!
Working with the clients whom we believe in and love to serve is truly a privilege. We find ourselves bending over backwards for these people. We cheer their successes and commiserate with their disappointments. The opportunity to be a part of someone's future and growth is not a role we take lightly. Afterall, a marketing company helps you get where you want to go. Your marketing partner should be your cheerleader, your support and your friend. They should be candid enough to tell you that your ideas won't support your goal and caring enough to believe in you when you are struggling to believe in yourself. Whether our client is a person in a large company or the owner of a small firm, the natural "values fit" must be there in order for exponential growth to occur.
Moving on....
When a client is rude, disrespectful and unprofessional, it is easy to agree to move on. But what if the problem isn't so obvious? What if the culture is just not aligned? What if the way the client communicates, the beliefs they hold about marketing or the way they treat marketing is just not a fit? It's tough (epecially on payroll weeks) but I say the right approach is to wish them well and provide referrals to other firms where they may be better aligned. In the end, it's better for your client and better for you. It is a respectful and kind act to sacrifice revenue so that the client can be happier and better served. It is also a leap in the right direction as you set the direction of your firm. I am taking a stand by saying, "It must be done."
Believe and care. Or, let go.
