Ok, I am a marketer but I am also a consumer. Kellogg's is reported to be experimenting burning each separate cornflake with the Kellogg's brand. The reason? To combat "copycats" of cornflakes.
Apparently, there is a pervasive rumor that plain label brands are claiming that their corn flakes are secretly REALLY manufactured by Kelloggs. But, AU CONTRAIRE, says Kellogg, we only make our own super special cornflakes. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES! Is this really what marketing is coming to in the US? Are we going to start branding each grain of rice, each bit of orzo, each popcorn kernel? Is this really branding or is it protectionism?
